Olaplex – It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3 (4, 5, 6, 7, 8 oh and 0)
Game changer, it’s a term used to describe so many new beauty innovations, that it’s kind of lost its meaning at this stage – every product can’t be a game changer, can it? Well where Olaplex is concerned it definitely disrupted things in the world of haircare, both in salon and at home – in fact it invented a whole new game of its own. When we were at the planning stages of MyBeautyEdit.com and came to discussing what hair brands we wanted to be part of our edit, Olaplex was first on our list. Vegan, cruelty free and recognised worldwide as the hair repair and conditioning treatment of choice for hairdressers, we knew we had to feature it as MBE Approved.
But What Exactly is Olaplex?
The brainchild of a group of chemists led by Dean Christal, Eric Pressly and Craig Hawker, who had a vision to create a product that could keep chemical treatments from damaging hair, Olaplex works at a molecular level to repair damaged and broken bonds inside the hair shaft, Olaplex is different to other hair repair treatments in that it is designed to work from the inside out. Available a professional strength in salon treatment, that involves steps 1 & 2 (check out our recommendations for salons to have this treatment done in Ireland, below), the people behind Olaplex know that homecare and maintenance plays an important role in keeping hair healthy and strong, so they have created a complete home strengthening and styling range that makes up steps 0, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8! Confused much? Don’t be, we’ve broken down into easy steps, our recs for getting the most from your Olaplex treatment at home.
How To Use Your Home Care Olaplex Hair Strengthening Ritual
Below, we shared our thoughts and tips on the entire Olaplex home care range. Created to be used as a step by step repair system, you don’t need to use every product together. If you could only buy one Olaplex product today to start, it definitely needs to be the No.3 Hair Perfector and after that we definitely recommend adding the No.4 & No.5 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and Conditioner, closely followed by the No. 8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask. The rest of the range are all worthy of a place on your haircare shelf and we do recommend them, but conscious beauty is as much about how you consume beauty as it is about the ethics and processes behind your favourite brands, so if you are new to Olaplex, try out the. bestsellers first, but be warned – you will be hooked!
Olaplex No.0 Intensive Bond Treatment
This super fine liquid is designed to PRIME your hair, prepping it to absorb as much as the Olpalex No.3 Bond Perfector as possible. It boosts the efficacy of No. 3 and makes a noticeable difference to hair, compare to applying No.3 to just wet hair.
To Use: This step in the Olaplex hair repair system is fairly straight forward. Apply the product directly to your hair using the nozzle, saturating your hair from root to top. Leave for 10 minutes, then follow with your application of No.3 while your hair is still damp/wet.
Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector
The golden child of the Olaplex family, No.3 offers professional grade hair repairing results, at home. The best selling product in the range, Olaplex No.3 is basically what all the fuss is about! This cream treatment will repair hair from the inside out, the results are transformative and it is 100% worthy of the hype!
To Use: Apply to wet, unwashed hair. We recommend prepping with No.0 if you can. Apply the cream from to tip, working it into every strand with your fingertips, or alternatively comb through with a wide tooth comb. Olaplex recommend to leave it on for 10 minutes, but we’ve found (through out dedicated and selfless commitment to product research, ahem 😉) that results are better when left longer, we’ve even been known to sleep with it in our hair. To rinse, wet your hair and follow with your shampoo and conditioner. Use twice a week for hair in bad need of repair or once a week for hair health maintenance.
Olaplex No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo
Suitable for everyday use this shampoo woks hard to deeply cleanse and repair the hair. Supercharged with Camilla and Olive Fruit Oil to moisturise the hair, Olaplex No.4 Shampoo is sulphate free and vegan friendly, but unlike a lot of sulphate free shampoos, it doesn’t leave hair feel heavy, instead it naturally lathers leaving hair glossy and soft.
To Use: Gentle enough to use every wash, to boost the results of your Olaplex treatment. Suitable for coloured/chemically treated hair.
Olaplex No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner
Such a fantastic conditioner, that hydrates and helps repair hair as part of the Olaplex system. A little goes a long way, Olaplex No. 5 is amazing for taming dry, frizzy, over processed hair.
To Use: Apply to lengths and ends of damp (not super wet) hair after shampooing with Olaplex No. 4. Comb through with a wide tooth comb. Leave for a minute or two before rinsing – if you can hack it, rinse with cold water to really seal the hair and boost shine. Think if it like early morning sea swimming, but for your hair – you’ll learn to love it (or the results at least!)
Olaplex No.6 Bond Smoother
This leave-in styling cream is designed to hydrate and protect hair from heat damage, while also speeding up drying time. It is also great for taming fly away frizzy bits of hair, that just won’t listen to reason! Infused with coconut oil and vitamin E – it is super hydrating, just don’t use too much.
To Use: Take a pea size amount (less is always more) and rub it between your fingers to warm it up. Then fun you fingers lightly through the lengths and ends of your hair, while avoiding the roost. Olaplex say you can use this product on dry hair, but we much prefer the results when used on damp hair before drying / styling.
Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil
This shine boosting oil is lightweight and quick absorbing treatment made with sunflower and moringa oils. It works to repair broken bonds and split ends, while increasing softness and reducing frizz. It really ramps up the shine factor and you don’t need much to let it do its thing.
To Use: Can be used alone by adding a few drops to ends of damp hair before styling or for very dry/frizzy hair, mix with your Olaplex No.6 Bond Smoother.
Olaplex No.8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask
The latest addition to the family, Olaplex No.8 is an intensive, hydrating hair mask, that rebuilds broken bonds while adding moisture to your hair – a drink for thirst hair, you could say!
To Use: Use this mask after shampooing, once a week. Comb through hair and leave for 10-20 minutes. We prefer to skip the conditioner step when using Olaplex No.8 Intense Moisture Mask. Rinse with cold water as per the No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner.
